Paris (CNN) -- Carla Bruni, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, has confirmed long-standing rumors she is pregnant and vowed to keep the child out of the spotlight.

"I will do everything to protect this child. ...I will never expose this child," she said in an interview that aired Sunday night on French TV station TF1.

She did not disclose the sex of the child or say when the baby was due.

She said the decision about seeking the public eye should be one for an adult, not a child.

"As wife of the president, this position certainly puts me more on the defensive with regards to my child," she said.

Bruni, a former supermodel turned singer, married Sarkozy in February 2008, having dated Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger earlier.

Sarkozy divorced his wife of more than 11 years before marrying Bruni. He is 56; Bruni is 43.
