Donald Trump Will Be Putin’s Puppet in a Second Term, Says John Bolton, a.k.a. Guy Who Had a Front-Row View the Last Time Around

According to Trump’s former national security adviser, nothing would make Vladimir Putin happier than the ex-president winning a second term.

From the penchant for violence to the unbridled authoritarianism, there are many reasons to be deeply afraid of a potential second term for Donald Trump. Another one high on the list? The ex-president, who spent his first term in office and the years since going to bat for a certain ex-KGB agent, would be only too happy to do Vladimir Putin’s bidding once again.

Speaking to MSNBC over the weekend, former national security adviser John Bolton suggested that only a village idiot would buy Putin’s claims that Russia would prefer Joe Biden to win the 2024 election. In reality, “if Trump is elected, there will be celebrations in the Kremlin,” Bolton explained, “there’s no doubt about it, because Putin thinks that he is an easy mark.”

During a rally in South Carolina last week, Trump claimed that Putin had paid him a “great compliment” when he said that Biden would be Russia’s preference because the current president is “more experienced” and “more predictable.” As Bolton noted on Sunday, Putin’s remarks were part of a “clear disinformation effort...to give Trump the opportunity — which he is foolish enough to take — to say, well, I thought that was actually a compliment to me.”

Trump‘s apparent willingness to win a second term and let Putin do whatever the f--k he wants has been on full, terrifying display this month, most notably when the former guy said that he would “encourage” Russia to attack any NATO country that doesn’t pay its “bills.” (To be clear: Despite what Trump has repeatedly claimed, countries must spend no set amount of money on defense, and no nation in NATO owes the US for not spending 2% of their GDP annually.) When Trump belatedly commented on the shocking news of opposition leader Alexey Navalny’s death—which Biden said “Putin is responsible for”— it was not to condemn how the Russian president silences his critics but to claim he’s been treated similarly. “The sudden death of [Navalny] has made me more and more aware of what is happening in our Country,” Trump wrote on social media, not mentioning Putin once. “It is a slow, steady progression, with CROOKED, Radical Left Politicians, Prosecutors, and Judges leading us down a path of destruction.... WE ARE A NATION IN DECLINE, A FAILING NATION!”

The former guy’s disturbing commentary over the last several weeks is, of course, just the latest in a long line of Kremlin-friendly words and actions by the former president of the United States. As a reminder, he also:

  • Publicly sided with Putin over US intelligence agencies re: 2016 election meddling
  • Wanted Ukraine investigated for alleged election meddling, a line straight out of the Kremlin’s playbook
  • Talked to Putin—who could probably barely keep a straight face—about forming a “cybersecurity unit” with Russia to combat “election hacking”
  • Called for Russia to be let back in an expanded G7 despite being kicked out for annexing Crimea
  • Excused killings by Putin, saying the US is just as bad
  • Leaked classified information from another country to Russia
  • Allowed Russia to expand its influence in Syria
  • Bizarrely defended the Soviet Union’s 1979 invasion of Afghanistan, saying Russia was “right to be there,” a statement the Wall Street Journal editorial board responded to by writing: “We cannot recall a more absurd misstatement of history by an American President”
  • Called Putin’s invasion of Ukraine “genius
  • Asked Putin to help him take down Joe Biden
