Two people died and at least 31 were injured when a bomb targeting a former minister exploded in a busy area of Bogotá on Tuesday in an attack not seen in the Colombian capital for years.

The assassination attempt left Fernando Londono, a hardline interior minister in the previous administration and radio show host, bruised and suffering minor shrapnel wounds. His driver and a police bodyguard died in the attack, which took place shortly before midday in a bustling commercial district.

Gustavo Petro, the mayor of Bogotá, said a pedestrian fixed an explosive to the door of Mr Londono’s armoured SUV before detonating it remotely. He said the authorities had video footage of the attack.
