Él mismo se definió como hijo de una “familia venida a menos”. A los 15 años, estudiaba para ser torero y se le ocurrió vender dibujos a la salida de la Plaza de La Macarena. Tenía por la fiesta brava un gran encanto, pues su tío Joaquín Angulo lo llevaba con frecuencia. Le fascinaba el cartelista mexicano Carlos Ruano Llopis, que en ese momento para él era “como Picasso”, y empezó a imitarlo. Y cuando vendió una de esas obras, ¡a dos pesos!, comenzó a considerar dejar el toreo y volverse un artista.<span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">A los 19 años, expuso en Bogotá en la galería Leo Matiz. Con la plata que se ganó, alquiló un cuarto en Tolú y se fue a trabajar a las orillas del mar. Cuando volvió a presentar sus cuadros, no solo se vendieron todos, sino que se ganó un premio nacional de pintura. Ese premio le cambió la vida. Se ganó unos dólares que le alcanzaron para comprarse un tiquete para Europa. Esa famosa frase de Hemingway se ajusta a lo que encontró Botero allí. Para sostenerse en la Academia de San Fernando, en Madrid, vendía ilustraciones a la salida del Museo del Prado. Luego se trasladó a Italia y entró como estudiante a la Academia de Bellas Artes de Florencia, en donde pasaba gran parte de su tiempo “porque daban materiales gratis y porque había calefacción”. Botero vivía en un estudio muy humilde y por eso, cuando llegaba el invierno, tenía que trabajar y dormir con el abrigo puesto.<span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Con su estilo propio y algo de éxito, Botero se fue a probar suerte al extranjero. Vivió un año en México y en 1958 se fue a Estados Unidos. Para ese entonces ya estaba casado con Gloria Zea, quien contó en una entrevista que se conocieron en una fiesta cuando ninguno de los dos tenía un centavo. “Él pasaba a recogerme con unos pantalones de pana en los que limpiaba los pinceles”, dijo. Cuando le anunció el compromiso a su familia, su mamá se desmayó, pues creía al principio que Botero no era un artista, sino un pintor de brocha gorda.

Se trata de Dietrich Malov, el director del Museo Alemán. Al hombre le gustó tanto la obra de Botero que en 1970 hizo en su país cinco exposiciones. De ahí empezaron a llamarlo de todas partes. La novedad que representaba Botero no solo estaba relacionada con sus gordas, sino con el hecho de que, en un momento en que el arte era abstracto, el pintor logró reflejar la cotidianidad de una época. Pintaba desde las prostitutas de Medellín hasta las frutas del trópico, las madres superioras del colegio y las corridas de toros de su juventud. “En vez de darles la espalda a sus raíces y a sus orígenes, él prefirió convertirlos en el tema central de su obra artística”, explica su hijo Juan Carlos.<span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Pero no todo en la vida de Botero fue de colores alegres. El pintor sufrió dos golpes que lo marcaron profundamente. En unas vacaciones en 1974, cuando iba con su familia en el carro entre Sevilla y Córdoba, un camión perdió el control y los estrelló. Su hijo Pedrito, de cuatro años, murió inmediatamente y el pintor perdió la falange del meñique derecho. El dolor que le produjo la muerte del niño fue tan desgarrador que duró encerrado durante meses en su estudio en París solamente pintándolo. Su segundo matrimonio con Cecilia Zambrano no pudo sobrevivir a la tragedia. Botero decía que el mejor cuadro que hizo en su vida fue el retrato <span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:italic;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Pedrito a caballo,<span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> que está en el Museo de Antioquia. En los 30 meses que estuvo recluido en la Escuela de Caballería ―por el delito de enriquecimiento a favor de terceros― solo lo visitó una vez. Transcurrieron más de cuatro años para que pudieran volver a hablarse. Ese doloroso capítulo quedó atrás y la relación de los dos fue excelente hasta los últimos días.<span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">En su trabajo también tuvo polémicas. Ninguna de sus exposiciones generó tantos comentarios como la que hizo sobre los abusos de los soldados norteamericanos en la prisión en Abu Ghraib en Irak. Según el pintor, quería “dejar un testimonio contra el horror”. La mayoría de estos han sido reseñados en las primeras planas de los medios, que han celebrado cada logro del artista como un acontecimiento nacional. En la década de los setenta, entró a formar parte de las galerías más importantes de Europa y expuso desde en el Grand Palais de París hasta en el Museo Hishborn, en Washington.<span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Desde ahí sus pinturas viajaron a las principales capitales del mundo, desde Roma hasta Shanghái. Su obra <span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:italic;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Adán y Eva <span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">se ubicó a la entrada de Expo Sevilla 92, y recibió homenajes sin precedentes cuando sus esculturas ocuparon las aceras de los Campos Elíseos y después decoraron los alrededores de las pirámides de Egipto. Además, los visitantes a cada una de sus muestras y retrospectivas se cuentan por cientos de miles: 218.000 visitantes en Ciudad de México o 110.000 en Estocolmo, el 10 % de los habitantes de la ciudad. Y sus cuadros, que valían apenas 200 dólares, hoy están en la lista de los mejor vendidos en Latinoamérica. Tanto que Peggy Guggenheim, sobrina del fundador del Museo Guggenheim de Nueva York, y quien descubrió al artista Jackson Pollock, aseguró una vez que los tres pintores más importantes del siglo eran Bacon, Picasso y Botero.<span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Fernando Botero, además de haber sido un gran pintor, fue un hombre muy generoso. Las colecciones de arte que le ha regalado a Bogotá y a Medellín, no solo de sus propias obras sino de los grandes maestros de la historia como Picasso, Matisse, Renoir y Dalí, lo convirtieron en el mayor filántropo del país. El valor de esas obras superaría en el mercado los 200 millones de dólares. Y otro dato curioso es que él fue de lejos el mayor coleccionista de su propia obra. Tenía almacenados en diversas bodegas en todo el mundo no menos de 300 cuadros y docenas de esculturas que él consideraba sus mejores trabajos. With the money he earned, he rented a room in Tolú and went to work on the seashore. When he returned to present his paintings, not only were they all sold, but he won a national painting prize. That award changed his life. He earned a few dollars that were enough to buy a ticket to Europe. He embarked in Buenaventura on a modest Italian ship and arrived in Madrid in 1952, willing to give everything to live from painting and nothing else.<span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Many artists describe their youth in Europe as a golden age in which they lived "very poor, but very happy". To support himself at the Academy of San Fernando, in Madrid, he sold illustrations at the exit of the Prado Museum. Then he moved to Italy and entered as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he spent much of his time "because they gave free materials and because there was heating." Botero lived in a very humble studio and that's why, when winter came, he had to work and sleep with his coat on.<span style="font-size:13.999999999999998pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">With his own style and some success, Botero went abroad to try his luck. He lived in Mexico for a year and in 1958 he went to the United States. By then he was already married to Gloria Zea, who said in an interview that they met at a party when neither of them had a penny. "He would pick me up with corduroy pants in which he would clean the brushes," she said. When he announced the engagement to his family, his mother fainted, because she believed at first that Botero was not an artist, but a painter with a broad brush.

This is Dietrich Malov, the director of the German Museum. The man liked Botero's work so much that in 1970 he made five exhibitions in his country. From there they started calling him from everywhere. The novelty that Botero represented was not only related to his fatties, but to the fact that, at a time when art was abstract, the painter managed to reflect the everyday life of an era. He painted everything from the prostitutes of Medellín to the fruits of the tropics, the mothers superiors of the school and the bullfights of his youth. The painter suffered two blows that marked him deeply. On a holiday in 1974, when he was with his family in the car between Seville and Córdoba, a truck lost control and crashed them. His four-year-old son Pedrito died immediately and the painter lost the phalanx of the right pinky. The pain caused by the death of the child was so heartbreaking that he remained locked for months in his studio in Paris only painting him. His second marriage to Cecilia Zambrano could not survive the tragedy. In the 30 months he was held at the Cavalry School – for the crime of enrichment in favor of third parties – he only visited him once. It took more than four years for them to speak again. According to the painter, he wanted to "leave a testimony against horror." Most of these have been reviewed on the front pages of the media, which have celebrated each achievement of the artist as a national event. In addition, visitors to each of its exhibitions and retrospectives number in the hundreds of thousands: 218,000 visitors in Mexico City or 110,000 in Stockholm, 10% of the city's inhabitants. And his paintings, which were worth just $200, are now on the bestseller list in Latin America. The art collections he has given to Bogotá and Medellín, not only of his own works but of the great masters of history such as Picasso, Matisse, Renoir and Dalí, made him the greatest philanthropist in the country. The value of these works would exceed 200 million dollars in the market. And another curious fact is that he was by far the greatest collector of his own work. He had stored in various warehouses around the world no less than 300 paintings and dozens of sculptures that he considered his best works. That was the greatest satisfaction of a man who spent the 90 years surrounded by the love of his family, the affection of his friends, the recognition of his compatriots and the admiration of the whole world.
