He has received Academy Award nominations for his role in Walk the Line (2005) where he portrayed Johnny Cash, and for his role as a World War II veteran in the Paul Thomas Anderson film The Master (2012). Other notable roles include Signs (2002), Inherent Vice (2014) and The Village (2004).
Aside from acting Phoenix is also a producer and activist, particularly for animal rights.
