Factors that Influence Architectural Design

Architectural design is complicated in many ways. From the actual design of the building and meeting the client’s purpose and beauty requirements to considering the materials used, there is so much planning that takes place before the commercial construction can even begin.

Neenan Archistruction® is a building design and construction firm that helps our customers in commercial, education, government, and healthcare industries have a building that will last them for decades into the future. We offer a very unique approach to architectural design called our Collaborative Design Process. Here, we keep you in the loop at every stage of the design and construction process, offering many meetings and check-ins with you in order to ensure the building is progressing as you’ve envisioned. We also implement target costing into every design decision we do, so you aren’t met with a surprise bill. Below, we’ll take a look at factors that influence architectural design. Geography & Climate

Geography and climate of a location have a big impact on the architectural design process. After all, if you are constructing a commercial building in a location that receives a lot of rain, perhaps a limestone facade may not be the best choice. In the modern era, you also have to account for what is around the potential building space, such as other buildings, traffic, a residential neighborhood, and more. Are you building on a hill? Do you want the building to be built partially into the hill, which can save you big on utility costs? Geography, thus, plays a large role in architectural design.

Religion & Culture

For architectural design, religion may play a role in case some religions have requirements. However, unless you are constructing a church, a mosque, or some other religious building, modern building architecture is predominantly devoid of religious motifs or referrals. That being said, culture can play a role in architectural design. Feng Shui is a big influence, as well as if the client has a particular design style they would like to see incorporated, such as columns in the front as a throwback to Greek and Roman architectural design.

Budget

While we all like to think that money doesn’t matter, in reality, it does. And when it comes to building design and construction, budget plays a big role. In essence, it will determine what “extras” you can include in your commercial building. Extras include hardwood floors, more architectural design features, and higher-end materials, such as granite and slate roofing. However, there are so many options in order to reduce costs that you can have the building of your dreams and still be in budget. When you partner with our commercial design company, we use target costing, which incorporates cost as a factor with the intention of minimizing waste and creating value. We will help you evaluate the added cost of a particular feature, so you can make sound decisions based on your vision.

Building Codes & Any Regulations

Building codes and regulations can be a big challenge, as they can severely limit architectural designs you’d like to do, and oftentimes, you can’t get around them. That being said, Neenan Archistruction® is always willing to put together a commercial construction design and help you seek a local variance if need be. We will work around any local building codes and/or regulations that inhibit your building project to still make it extraordinary for you, while staying to code.
