Shakira has now reached legendary status as her 'Pies Descalzos' foundation has helped many people through her philanthropic work, therefore, Mayor Jaime Pumarejo announced that a statue of the singer Shakira will soon be placed in a strategic location in the city where she was born.
Where will Shakira's sculpture be located?
According to the mayor, citizens will be in charge of choosing -through a vote- the space where this monument will be installed. "The question we ask the people of Barranquilla is where they want to see this statue, where they would like us to put it, and thus participate and send much affection to this artist who has raised the name of our city and has taken it around the world," he said.
How tall will Shakira's statue be?
The district governor indicated that the work is in process and is in charge of the plastic artist Yino Márquez. "We are going to pay tribute to Shakira. In a couple of months, we will be unveiling a statue of her so that the people of Barranquilla feel proud of this cultural reference, but also so that visitors come to make a 'pilgrimage', take a picture, stay in a hotel, and invest in our beautiful city," he said.
In this regard, the plastic artist Yino Marquez himself confirmed that the sculpture of the singer Shakira will be 20 feet tall and will be made in bronze. "The process is currently in the preparation phase," he explained.
Shakira will attend the Pies Descalzos event
Pumarejo also added that the artist will be accompanying the delivery event of the Nuevo Bosque mega-school, which was built with the support of the Pies Descalzos Foundation. This announcement was made in the middle of the beginning of the construction of a school in the Villas de San Pablo neighborhood, a project supported by the organization led by the artist, as well as by the Ministry of Housing, the Mayor's Office, and the Santo Domingo Foundation.
Shakira already has a statue in Barranquilla
It is important to point out that since 2006, a statue in honor of the singer-songwriter from Barranquilla was already erected, is located in the park next to the Metropolitano stadium, in the south of the city. It was created by the German artist Dieter Patt and is 16 ft high, however it has deteriorated.
