It was an honor to welcome Mario Lubetkin, FAO’s Assistant Director General and Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), at the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima, Peru, one of our CGIAR centers headquartered in the region. He was accompanied by Pablo Rabczuk, Mariana Escobar, Fernando Castro, Gonzalo Tejada, Rocio Malleux and César La Serna 🇵🇪 from FAO Regional and Peru offices.
His enthusiastic response to our invitation during FAO’s #LARC38 showcases a commitment to collaborative efforts for sustainable agri-food systems transformation.
It also proves our shared vision about the pivotal role of science and innovation in driving this transformation and highlights the importance of national and regional agricultural research alliances in LAC, to which CGIAR's extensive experience and global network can make decisive contributions.
Collaboration is key. FAO priorities for the next two years in Latin America and the Caribbean —better production, nutrition, environment, and life for all— are objectives we wholeheartedly support. During our dialogue, we identified and agreed on more concrete actions to strengthen our partnership around: complementarity, coordination, thematic priorities, advocacy articulation and enhanced visibility of our joint work.
His visit allowed for a deep dive into CGIAR's regional work and our current research initiatives. Our colleagues from CIP presented some key examples of our work, including potato biofortification and resilient cities. We also visited CIP's genebank, knowing more about our groundbreaking work to cryo- preserve agricultural biodiversity for future generations. The campus tour culminated with a stop by the pathology laboratory, to evidence the safe handling of germplasm.
Thanks to my colleagues Guy G. Hareau, Willy Pradel, Vânia C. Rennó Azevedo, and Giovanna Müller for their fantastic presentations, as well as to Lilia Salinas and Hector Zevallos Urquieta for all their support.
Gratitude to CIP, led by its Director-General Simon Heck, for the dedication of his multidisciplinary team in organizing this visit, including Lourdes Gamarra, Joel Ranck, Viviana Karime Infantas Galleno, Andrea Prado Arias, Jose Torres, Ximena Cerna and Anthony C..
Let's continue working together towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and equitable food systems for all!
We hope to welcome Mario in our other CGIAR centers in LAC - International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT in the very near future.
