It is good to see that NHS waiting lists are forecast to fall from mid-2024, according to the Institute For Fiscal Studies. It's a step in the right direction, with recent efforts reducing the backlog from 7.8m to 7.6m, being thanks to hospital efforts through additional surgery sessions. At The Surgical Consortium, our mission is to empower #NHS trusts to increase their surgical capacity and patient throughput. How? By orchestrating additional surgery sessions through parallel theatres and clinics, leveraging specialist #NHS consultants, and optimising operations. Our flagship initiative, '#SuperWeekends', is a testament to our commitment to this cause, enabling hospitals to extend their service hours into the weekend. By championing these efforts, we're not just facilitating more surgeries; we're ensuring that more patients receive the timely care they need. #NHS #HealthcareInnovation #SuperWeekends #MedicalInsourcing #NHSEngland #Efficiencies

Another Tale from the American Healthcare Trenches: A dear friend in the Bay Area has undergone almost a year of hell from what was supposed to be a routine knee replacement surgery because of a staph infection that has led to two more surgeries, endless hospitalizations and home health services, full time caregiving from his wife, and antibiotics that still can't seem to wipe the bug out. A surgeon has just said he needs an immediate 4th (and then a 5th ) surgery, so I have been desperately trying to help him get a fast second opinion before the infection takes hold again and before he goes under the knife again somehow expecting a better outcome this time. I have the benefit of very executive connections in tier 1 healthcare places all across the country. I spent 7.5 hours yesterday and 4.5 hours today (so far) calling, emailing, texting, faxing my network to try to find an opening for a 2nd opinion. Even with high-level executive physician and department chair nudging at both Stanford and UCSF, the "first available appointment" made available so far (with much "we're doing you a favor getting you in so soon" attitude from scheduling staff) is April and May respectively! OUCH! He would be long dead if we waited that long! We're still trying, but it looks likely he'll just have the 4th surgery and hope that the antibiotics somehow work this time. Advice: Surgical centers are so backed up from short-staffing and the pandemic backlog that you need to start half a year or more in advance of when you think you might need a surgery--especially an elective one. Starting a year before that is probably safer. And if you need a sudden second opinion, be prepared for full time work/advocacy to make it happen. And mark your case as "urgent, highly complicated, very complex" in hopes a guru somewhere wants to take it on. Snarky Commentary: I have all the benefits of white male privilege one can have as well as a network of physicians, executives, and experts like almost no one else has, and I can't make the system work for me or for dear friends or for many of the cancer patients I advocate for. It is utterly broken--all of those who are used to "pulling strings" to get fast access better be aware that your former methods may not work anymore. Now imagine if you are a person of color, or poor, or uninsured, or can't drive to appointments, or don't speak English as your first language, or, or, or...we are so far from equity and fairness in American healthcare and things are getting worse as the system is under so much strain. Meanwhile politicians divert us all to focus on culture wars so we don't pay attention to what a failure their health policies are for the American people.

New Post: https://ow.ly/zybg50PL7MZ At the moment, ASCs have significant tailwinds. However, their long-term success depends on them not falling into "hospital thinking" as they grow. Today's piece from The Scope gets into what that means, and how to consider the "abrasion factor." #AmbulatorySurgeryCenters #ASCs #OutpatientSurgery #QuintupleAim

Imagine rushing to the emergency department, worried about wait times and unsure if you will be treated or, worse.... sent somewhere else. 🔎 Did you know that in its busiest month ever, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital saw an average of 𝟑𝟑𝟎 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲, yet managed to maintain a 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟏𝟓 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬? This is not just about numbers; it's a brilliant approach and learning to follow, in the hospital's groundbreaking approach to patient care. The secret behind this success? The introduction of the STREAM model, which has dramatically improved patient flow, has proven so effective that it's set to be implemented in other departments. Moreover, a significant focus on reducing elective surgery wait times has led to a 65% decrease in long wait lists, ensuring patients receive timely surgeries. These strides in healthcare at the Sunshine Coast are not just statistics; they represent real-life impacts on individuals and families, ensuring that every visit to the emergency department is met with swift and compassionate care. It's a reminder that innovation and dedication in healthcare can make all the difference in the community. 👏 Queensland Health, well done to the team at Sunshine Coast! #hospitals #australia #technology #leadership https://lnkd.in/gp-Gwycs

💥 We are thrilled to celebrate our partnership with 410 Medical: LifeFlow. 💥 Ballad Health and the Ballad Health Innovation Center are partnering with 410 Medical, Inc. to use its LifeFlow device, a rapid fluid delivery mechanism that reduces the time needed to revive a patient in need of blood or fluids. From the outset, LifeFlow generated success stories throughout the #AppalachianHighlands. Early in the pilot, a care team reported a patient was lethargic, with critically low blood pressure and heart rate. The physician requested an ICU bed transfer and called for rapid response care team for assessment. The medical emergency team nurse rapidly delivered fluids via the LifeFlow device, and the nurse shared that the patient immediately became alert and oriented with a rapid improvement in vitals. After the physician reassessed the patient, no transfer to the ICU was needed. Morgan May DNP, MSN, MBA, RN, CENP, chief nursing officer for Ballad Health’s Southern Region, described the LifeFlow device as a gamechanger because of its ease of use, cost-effectiveness and sustainability. “Early and aggressive fluid therapy is critical when treating life-threatening illnesses, but traditional methods of infusion can be slow, cumbersome and complex to administer,” May said. This partnership is another milestone in our relentless pursuit of advancing healthcare - for the region and the industry. Together, let's continue to innovate, improve, and positively impact the lives of the people we serve. Alan Levine Anthony Keck Amit Vashist Clay Runnels Bobbie Murphy Lisa Smithgall David M.
