    While working at the Berkeley Seismological Lab, I took an architecture course called "The Secret Life of Buildings", which taught me about Building Science, the field to study buildings once they are built. So often in architecture, once the brilliant building is designed, built, and splashed onto a magazine cover, that's the end of the story. Building Science studies how actual buildings perform, and informs ways to improve their performance and better design future buildings.…

    While working at the Berkeley Seismological Lab, I took an architecture course called "The Secret Life of Buildings", which taught me about Building Science, the field to study buildings once they are built. So often in architecture, once the brilliant building is designed, built, and splashed onto a magazine cover, that's the end of the story. Building Science studies how actual buildings perform, and informs ways to improve their performance and better design future buildings. For instance, sometimes that building with all the great daylight ends up being too hot and the occupants board up the windows, so Building Science would discover this and indicate that next time, more thermal mass is needed to balance the temperatures, or there should be fewer south-facing windows.
