This is an EXCELLENT film for an introduction to the life and culture of the coastal villages of medieval Japan.
The choreography and scenery are stunning.
We have a vauge story about a shinobi (ninja)who escapes from his Ninja village retreat and bonds with a another from the same village who has the skills of a kunoichi (woman/ninja). There are unpleasant sequences of a horse being killed and shark hunting, which are expertly done and are vital to the 'plot' The story continues with the two stars being hunted by ninja from the village of Iga, this cumilates in a fight to the death, which is really quite well done. The action in the film is excellent, except from some 'wire work' - but it's the genre nowadays. It IS, a good down to earth representation of medieval ninja, light years away from modern black 007 hooded figures.
numerous in films now and of which all critics are 'experts'
I am a tutor/writer for Colleges and Education in the UK. I read and speak Japanese and I teach Ninjutsu and practice fully, Ninpo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Ninja movie
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 10, 2015
I enjoyed this movie. If you are expecting a plot driven everything will be ok in the end movie, you will be sorely disappointed. This is a Manga comic made into live action. It has all the right ingredients special techniques, secret movies. Yes they have over done the wire work, and CGI, but for a ninja movie to work there has to be lots of action this movie has it. The down side of the movie is the characters changing sides as often as the wind blows, for some of the dumbest reason imaginable.

Kamui was poor even by the standards of his poor village. He has a burning desire to become stronger. To this end he joins the ninja. After years of training, including the disciplining of a "breakaway" ninja. He has risen up the ranks to become one off the best. Now he decides to breakaway himself. However no one leaves the ninja alive. Constantly on the run, and fighting for his life have made suspicious to everyone. So of course the first person he does trust seems to stab him in the back, just so he can save him. Even when Kamui finds some sort of community, is he just creating more targets for the Ninja Hunters vengeance? This movie is brutal with over the top action and fights, and traumatic in many of the innocent deaths on thee whim of the Lords and Ninja, but the movie is delivers what it is supposed to.

Kamui the lone ninja of the title has had enough of the assassination game and seeks to distance himself from his erstwhile comrades, they are not forgiving and seek to terminate him.
After several misadventures Kamui appears to have evaded them and even found a potential new home but all is not as it seems and things are about to go badly pear shaped.
