COLUMBUS, Ohio – Organizers have canceled the Red, White & BOOM! fireworks event set to take place in downtown Columbus this July due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event was set to observe its 40th annual celebration on July 3.

"Red, White & BOOM! will not host the region’s largest party, where 450,000 spectators traditionally have gathered, nor host the Midwest’s largest firework show," the event's website said.

Before the cancellation, organizers said they would watch for direction from the CDC and local and state health agencies. Organizers said they would also monitor Independence Day festivals in New York City, Philadelphia and Washington. D.C.
