Caracas, Venezuela (TDN) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has died. He was 58. His death was confirmed just about an hour ago by government officials. Vice president Maduro made the announcement on State television.

He announced that Chavez died at 4:25 P.M at a military hospital in Caracas, Venezuela. The cancer stricken president returned to Venezuela on February 18, 2013 after undergoing his fourth operation in Cuba but was not seen in public since.

In recent days, Chavez was said to be undergoing a strong regimen of chemotherapy.

Chavez served as Venezuela’s president for two six year terms before winning his third term in October 2012. He was however unable to take the oath of office in January 2013 because of ongoing cancer treatment in Cuba.

The death of the flamboyant leader who built houses and schools for Venezuela’s poor has left behind a truly divided nation. It also means that according to the constitution new elections will have to be held within 30 days.

It’s unclear whether Vice President Nicolas Maduro or National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello will take over on an interim basis.

As news of Chavez’s death became public scores of supporters took the streets of Caracas and other towns across Venezuela to mourn the death of the man who has ruled Venezuela since 1993.
