Lucky Star ~ Review

“Moe, moe, and more moe! Let the cuteness commence!“

For those that recognize, watch, or are fans of this series, you know perfectly well that words cannot describe the epicness of this series. And when I say epicness, I don`t mean that there are ridiculously awesome battle scenes. Nor do I mean the quality of animation is beyond awesome. Nor do I mean that it has a deep and unique plot that draws in the viewers. No. In fact, this series that I am about to review contains absolutely none of the following that I have just mentioned. So why is it epic? Well, I`m glad you asked; allow me to explain in the form of a review.

Lucky Star follows the lives of four high school friends: Izumi Konata – the main character that devotes her life to playing video games and pursuing her otaku life and her three friends, Kagami, Tsukasa and Miyuki as they live out their ordinary lives in an ordinary school. Although their lives may be ordinary, it is full of fun conversation, wacky characters and daily events that make every day seem extraordinary.

OK, so that`s the basic synopsis. You may be thinking, “You`re right; there is absolutely no plot whatsoever!”. So now you may be asking why this series is so famous and loved by not only the online anime community, but all over the world. Well… there really isn`t an answer to that question. From a fan (yes, I am one of the many Lucky Star fans), the only way to fully know the awesomeness to this series is to watch it yourself. Yes, it may seem crazy. But ask any Lucky Star fan and they will either say the word “moe” or give you an answer that is similar to mine. What`s moe you say? Well, let`s just say I will write a “My Thoughts On” review on it later on, shall we?

The series is animated by Kyoto Animation; famous not for the amount of series that they have animated, but for which series they have animated. They have animated some of the most well-known anime series to this day, including The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, Clannad and K-ON!, just to name a few. The series also contains some very well-known voice actors, including Aya Hirano playing the voice of Konata (also known as the voices of Haruhi from The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi and Lucy Heartfilia from Fairy Tail – on a side note… Aya Hirano became very famous after the success of Lucky Star due to the unique voice of Konata) and Emiri Katou playing the voice of Kagami (also known as the voices of Shiranui from Medaka Box and Hachikuji Mayoi from Nisemonogatari).

If you`re sitting there in front of your screen at this present time thinking to yourself, “So… this is basically a slice-of-life anime that has no plot, contains characters that look really girly, and seems like a series that only girls would watch…”, then let me tell you that you`re right and wrong at the same time. You`re right because the series has no plot, has girly characters and seems like a girly anime. But you`re very wrong because the main fan base of this anime is in fact grown-a*s men in their teens and twenties that are just as straight as a brand new metal ruler. Surprisingly, this series is very enjoyable to watch as it is layed back and calm; unlike the heavy battle anime series that we watch, Lucy Star is an anime that you can watch even just for a good chuckle. There are many anime watchers that hesitate to watch this series solely on the synopsis or art. But I say, give it a go. Because the majority of those people that hesitated to watch (but watched it anyway) came out to be a Lucky Star fan (as have I). It`s not too much to say that Lucky Star is the king of slice-of-life anime`s, and I do hope that I have encouraged you to give it a go. Lucky Star, banzai!
