This Oscar-winning short tells of a bull who preferred to sit under trees and smell flowers to clashing horns with his fellow animals. As luck would have it, an untimely bee reveals Ferdinand's ferocious side via pained howls and wild stomping. This lands him in the bull-fighting arena amidst characters based on Walt's animators with a matador reportedly modeled after Walt himself.

It’s a shame Disney never really got into the whole gruesome caricature business. They would’ve ruled at it. They flirted with it a few times but never to the extent that they did here, spurred on by Robert Lawson’s iconic illustrations. These Spanish bull-buyers(?) look unbelievable. But it really takes off when we get to Madrid and we get to see the caricatures of the animation team, led by a culturally interesting depiction of Walt Disney as a lusty, passionate Spaniard. You can tell by the way they animate him that everybody wanted to fuck Walt. People will probably be mad that I didn’t talk about the bull in this review but in my defense I got distracted when a Spanish version of Walt Disney took his shirt off.
Nothing Walt Disney loved more than doing racial stereotypes and the voices of the lady animals. Convinced his entire career was based around this. Anyway, some good gags, gorgeous animation, etc. My boy Ferdinand just liked flowers.

At one time the book Ferdinand the Bull (1936) was considered a must read for children and parents in libraries all over the world. It is still considered a "classic" like Strawberries for Sal or The Story of Ping, but mostly it just sits on the library shelf gathering dust--and that is too bad. It is a wonderful story about enjoying life and pacifism. But unlike in the late 30s and early 40s, most of the kids today (except those in Spain or Mexico) have not heard of bull fighting and it is no longer a glorified and celebrated event.

Once upon a time, Walt Disney made an animated short film about an introverted, prancing, sissy gay boy who doesn't like sport and grows up to be a muscle queen yet no less flamboyantly homo whose eyes bulge at the sight of a half-naked Spanish man who he proceeds to lick. Oh, the boy is actually a bull. How progressive!
This one is a really beautiful story set in Madrid which won The Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1938.
