Bear’s Breeches is a perennial plant that has large, dark green, lobed or toothed leaves and purplish and white flowers. It is prized for its dramatic foliage and its 3 foot tall flower spike. It is native to the Mediterranean region. The incredibly ornate capitols of Greek Corinthian columns are formed from stylized leaves of the Acanthus plant. The ancient Greek sculptor Callimachus is credited with the creation of Corinthian columns with their stylized acanthus leaves at the top. Since then, stylized acanthus leaves have been used extensively in art, architecture, furniture and sculpture for thousands of years. Hardy in zones 7-10.   

Growing Instructions for Bear’s Breeches

1. Soak the seeds in water for 1-2 days. 2. Plant the seeds in holes that are ½ of an inch deep. 3. Cover the seeds with soil. 4. Water the seeds. Keep the soil moist but not wet. The seeds germinate in 3 weeks and additional seedlings may spout in a month or so.
